Hi Reader,

Self-Care and Recharging—How Do You Show Up for Yourself?

“Oh, I’m doing self-care this week…” While this idea has evolved from just spa days, bubble baths, and chocolates to more “real” or mundane activities like meditation, eating healthy food, and exercising, there’s often still a sense of obligation. It gets tricky because there are things we have to do, but when the things that are “good for us” become a burden, it can be hard to do them, even if we intellectually know they will be beneficial. When we feel overwhelmed with demands, it can become a demand-avoidance scenario. Whether you’re dealing with a PDA profile or just want to feel like you have some choice in your life, it can be hard.

I heard this reframed as: How are you showing up for yourself? What energizes you right now?

Understanding Brain States and Body Signals

This relates to a series of classes I’ve been taking, which talk about brain states and knowing what you need. Being aware of your body, the signals it sends, and how to interpret them is crucial. This can be challenging if you’re dealing with some level of overwhelm or alexithymia (difficulty in interpreting your emotions). A key part of this teaching (Nonviolent Communication, if you want to know more) is that your emotions are signs that your needs are being met or not.

The Evolving Nature of Self-Care

As I’ve stabilized my sleep and energy management over the last few years, I’ve realized that what worked for me before doesn’t have the same impact anymore. Floating, for example, isn’t as effective now. I don’t know what I need because I’m not as tired or needing the same recharge. New problems are starting to emerge, and I don’t know how to fix them yet. I’ve come to understand that I don’t know how to recharge on a finer level because I had to deal with such basic needs first. For a while, sleep and functioning were most of what I could deal with, along with making food and keeping up with my business (see Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs).

Reflecting on Self-Care

One of the questions that struck me this week was: How do you show up for yourself? How do you make yourself smile? What can you do to make yourself feel supported and happy?

I’ll admit that I’m obsessing over this blanket. For me, it’s about recognizing when I’m tamping down my own excitement over something. Tamping down my excitement makes me feel like this inborn part of me is too much. Right now, showing up for myself means letting me work through strong emotions, both good and bad, and not trying to change who I am.

I’ve been told I’m liable to become close to obsessive when I’m really into something. And instead of hiding that, I’m trying to find ways to enjoy for it’s on value as well as to embed it further into my coaching work. (See the for fun podcast below!)

I’ll admit that I’ve also noticed I really like sticking my face in front of a gentle fan/air purifier…so what I’m weird. 😁

Hello Reader, How is it after the middle of February already? I’m seeing ads for spring bulbs and cleaning. All this has me thinking about Spring Cleaning again. Over the years with coaching, I’ve had a lot of conversations about cleaning and maintaining spaces. A couple of things that people don’t seem to make a distinction about is that there are at least 2 phases, possibly 3. 1: decluttering is different than 2) maintaining a space. Maintaining is a combination of frequentish picking up...
